We had a great time at our book fair yesterday at Barnes and Noble. Thanks to all of the students and families that came out on a snowy day to support our school. Click on the link below to watch a video from the event.

National Book Festival
On Saturday, I attended the 10th annual National Book Festival on the mall in Washington, DC. The highlights of my day included getting books signed by Jeff Smith, Phillip Hoose, Claudette Colvin, and Pat Mora.
Phillip Hoose is the author of a 2009 Newbery Honor Book called Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice. I am in the process of reading the book, which is about a 15 year old African-American girl who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery Bus nine months before Rosa Parks. The author tells the story of this unsung Civil Rights heroine.

New Books!
We have new books arriving daily in the library. Stop by to check out some of the great books that have been added.
A few of my personal favorites are biographies on Honda (yes, the man behind the cars), the Brothers Switzer (who invented Day-Glo colors) and one on Bruce Lee, the martial arts master.
We have also added about several series to our collection including Miami Jackson, Nikki and Deja, Ruby and the Booker Boys, Sammy Keyes, Sassy and Suddenly Supernatural.
Additionally, we have bought 26 more titles from Gail Gibbons, one of the best non-fiction authors/illustrators for children.
This is only the beginning of a great year for our growing library collection.
See you @ the library!

Welcome to the 2010-11 School Year
Welcome back to the 2010-11 School Year. This year will be an important one for our library. In June 2010, our library was awarded a LSTA grant of $10,000 with matching funds from our school district of $2,500. This means that we will be getting a whole lot of new books this year. Look for frequent updates about new books available in our school library.
This grant is awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and is administered through the State Library of NC.

Welcome to my new blog
Welcome to my new blog about Parkwood's library media center. This blog will be about happenings in the library of our school. You may sign up to be a follower and will receive email updates when I update the blog. This blog will not include book reviews because I have started an account on Shelfari where you can see the books that I have read and what I think about them.
